Every summer I have visions of myself;
I’m somewhere poolside, with a stack of books, a fancy lemonade, an easel with an incomplete masterpiece I’ve been working on and French music in the background.
This is rarely my reality. I managed one afternoon of painting (a sad unfinished still life of sunflowers) and several dinners set to Pandora’s Blossom Dearie. No pools, a few visits to the beach and BAM summer is almost over!
While I didn’t make it through a stack of books I did at least read two REALLY good ones that I am going to suggest;
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
If you have read the Red Tent then you are going to love this book. If you haven’t read the Red Tent you will probably still really love this book.
In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flinn
I’m in the middle of this book and cannot set it down! I love books with varying voices/perspectives and this one does a fantastic job of speaking from both the main characters. The author is witty, even hilarious, and the scenes are set with eagerness to learn more.
Marriage can be a real killer.
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?
Okay so Oprah’s summer reading list has 47 books and mine only has 2, there’s always next summer.
