We used to be in control of our chimps. We put diapers on them as hairy babies, we taught the smart ones sign language and we created iconic Tarzan as a symbol of their nurturing parental capabilities.
But times have changed… Planet of the Apes is in full force. I have never been more terrified of Jane Goodall’s best friends.
(But seriously, as an animal activist maybe we need to re-evaluate our forms of ‘sanctuaries’ and the like)

“Man severely mauled by chimps at South African refuge”
“JOHANNESBURG — Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, bit him severely and dragged him nearly a half mile, according to a paramedic official and local media reports.
The man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit, some 180 miles from Johannesburg, Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.”

“Chimpanzee attack victim faults state officials”
“Lawyers for a Connecticut woman severely disfigured in a chimpanzee attack have filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member’s warning that it was dangerous.
Attorneys for Charla Nash filed documents Wednesday with the state claims commissioner that explain why she should be allowed to sue the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection for $150 million. The commissioner must approve any lawsuit against the state. A hearing is set for Aug. 10 before Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr.
The chimpanzee named Travis ripped off Nash’s nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police outside Nash’s friend’s home in Stamford. Nash, who was permanently blinded, has had several surgeries including a face transplant. She remains at a nursing home outside of Boston.”

“Adult chimpanzee kills baby chimp in front of shocked Los Angeles Zoo visitors”
“(CBS News) LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Zoo visitors were scared and shocked to witness a 3-month-old chimpanzee mauled to death by an adult male chimp Tuesday.
Witnesses told CBS Los Angeles that about 100 or so people saw the tragedy, some so horrified they had to leave the zoo. Others were so enthralled that they captured parts of the incident on their cell phone cameras.
“Chimpanzee behavior can sometimes be aggressive and violent and the zoo is sorry that visitors had to be exposed to this,” the facility said in a statement.”
